Here is the September - Contest report 2007 (by DL2ALF) :
We had taken much on this time. Lots of
setup ideas were evaluated and new antennas were bought right before the
contest weekend. At last we decided to use 3 masts with 2 x 2 Mē 2M5WL
and 1 x 2 I0JXX as high as possible.
That's why we started the work already on Friday afternoon. Thanks to a
lot of helping hands from X16 (OV "Drei Gleichen") we could finish the
main works and had a superb barbecue on sunset. After a relaxed
breakfast on Saturday the rest of the antennas were mounted and the van
was filled with equipment up to the brim. BTW : The
weather forecasters were right. We got rain during the whole setup time.
The first time we could see the sun is on Saturday afternoon. Time to
remove the wet clothes and replace it with the backup ones (if you had
any!).
Contest work started normally with abt. 110 QSO / hour. Not bad! And
then BANG! The PA died suddenly after a good start. We hurried for
replacement. A couple of QSO was left during the works. Next attempt
with new fuses : tuning ... BANG! Return to the backup PA again.
Next QSOs were lost. Our chiefs on duty decided to open the PA box and
what they saw was a black burned piece of Teflon once was insulating the
output flapper. OK what to do now? Dismount the flapper construction,
scraping the Teflon with a sharp knife and thats it! Next attempt
: working! No problems anymore until the end.
The rest was business as usual. Propagation was quite normal. Nothing
special on our side. Nice to see the Western Europe contesters working
lots of EAs. Regarding this we were satified with our result : 400.000
points is the second best result we could ever achieve. It seems to be
the limit under normal conditions. Comparing the result with our
competitors from OL4A were are on eye-level but far away from DR9A
(444.000 points). Congrats!
