What a great weekend for VHF/UHF/SHF
contesters:
1. There was no (really no) rain. We could
not even remember that last good weather contest. Perhaps you can find one
in our photo gallery.
2. There was a lot of sunshine, some clouds, some slow wind. Unfortunately
not only at our location, i.e. no rain scatter at all.
3.
But a lot of QSO's and many, many DX and
fun.
The preparation for the contest went as
usual. A lot of routine jobs. Nothing special to report.
The special thing for July contest is
the circumstance that at this weekend (as every year) there is the
"Schneekopf Fest", a big event for locals and tourists. 5000 people
having fun with folk music (not all bands do have EMC hardened
equipment), "Thüringer Rostbratwust" (Thueringian barbeque sausages) and
"Rostbrätel" (a special kind of barbecue pork steaks), a mobile crane to
lift people from the ground at 978 meters a.s.l. up to 1000 meters (to
have a better look at our contest stations) and some more entertainment.
Please have a look at the photographs.
We very appreciate the good and correct
forecast of the meteorologists. We enjoyed the weather we are worthy
for. Temperatures around 20°C, some wind and increasing humidity on
Sunday but no thunderstorms around.
Because of the "Schneekopf Fest" we had
a very limited area available (30 by 20 meters) for all the antennas. It
is the EMC benchmark since we are using 144 MHz for IF for >1.3 GHz
bands.
We got some small problems at the
beginning of the contest: A coax switch for 9cm/3cm was out of order -
no output but we still received some stations!? Easy to replace. And the
70cm PA stopped with burned fuse and needed some coax relay repair by
the maintenance team on duty (DK4RC and DL6AUI, tnx).
The rest of the contest was just fun
for everybody. Good condx on most of the bands. Nice QSO numbers (see
results) and much higher than normal average distances. So we could
celebrate the first "Full House" with G3XDY on 23 - 3cm. G4EAT was
booming in on 3cm Sunday morning, a bit like on "legendary" October '95.
Within two hours after the contest
finished we were ready for the traditional final team photo. Then we
left the Schneekopf being happy about this great contest and looking
forward to the IARU VHF Contest in September. See all of you again!
