A short contest report about the July contest (by DL6AUI
and DL2AKT) :
 |
No surprise, already some days before the weekend the weather forecast was
announcing "optimum contest conditions", i.e. a lot of rain and wind.
We were faced to logistics problems already during loading of all equipment
into the vehicles: Looking for less rain to keep the stuff dry.
When going to the Schneekopf (978 masl) from home (about 300 masl) all our
hopes of better weather disappeared. We arrived at 9 am and found ourselves
in heavy rain, 7°C and strong wind. Yeah, it is contest time!
The same procedure as every year in July: The Gehlberg community is
celebrating the Schneekopf-Fest at the contest weekend with a lot of tents
and other equipment, e.g. a crane to move people above 1,000 masl (what
seams to bee very important for the Thuringians) and for sure thousands of
visitors. This means for us, we have much less area for our antennas and
shacks. Especially for 144 MHz we had a bad QTH.
Even with this difficult environment we managed to be ready for contest
exactly at 14:00 UTC. Equipment as usual: Two antenna systems for 144 MHz
and 432 MHz each, dishes for all other bands.
But by surprise, even with that strong rain on Saturday, the contest started
with quite good propagation conditions especially on the microwave bands.
The rain stopped in the night and on Sunday we had relative good weather and
returned with dry equipment to Gotha and Greiz.
The contest results we achieved were excellent, at last the team was
satisfied. New top scores on 9cm and 1.2cm and except the "Super-October
1995" there would have been on 23cm and 13cm too!
Helmut, DL4AZK(†),
has gone from us. Forever. We lost a loyal friend for many
years supporting us from the very beginning of our "Schneekopf" -
activities. We will never forget. Helmut, this contest is for you!
Last but not least, we would like to thank all OM's who were not directly
involved in the contest for their logistics support and all stations which
have worked with DL0GTH for the contacts. See all of you in September again.
