July '03

As usual, we started the loading of our vans on Friday. We had a short delay caused by the rent-a-car service but at least everything was stored. Due to a sport injury Detlef, DL3ALI, was not able to drive the second van and so Gerhard, DL2ASI, was standing in for him.
On Saturday at 8.00 am we started our tour to the "Schneekopf". A short break was necessary in Luisenthal because we left the 9cm equipment at home! Again Gerhard could fix this after a short phone call. At the "Schneekopf" normal contest weather : rain, storm and about 10deg Celsius. Means long underwear and waterproof clothing in July.
Thanks to our new mast constructions the setup was finished in quiet a short time. At 3.00 pm our 7 masts and 9 bands were operational. The weather remains bad during our activities.
At 14.00 UTC we started the contest with good performance. Sometimes we had a "sked buffer overflow" on the microwaves ! Later on, the weather cleared up and the rain stopped at night.
On Sunday, 24 and 47GHz were mounted on the tripods, but the signals were weak and sked partners were rare. The weather was good : sometimes the sun was shining and the temperature raised up to 18deg.
We stopped a few minutes to 14.00 UTC on Sunday and after 3 hours we started our way back home without getting wet.

Regarding our handicap with the "Schneekopffest", which was taking place synchronously with lots of spectators, our overall results were very satisfying. The conditions were very good on VHF: some Es on Saturday, fine tropo on Sunday. On 3cm and up no extraordinary propagation, no rain scatter. Well populated bands, especially from G and PA. Cu in September!
