Everything
started like one year ago :
Weather forecast promised cold fronts in a row for the contest weekend. We
started loading the van on Friday as usual without rain. On Saturday we were
quite in a hurry to complete the antenna setup before rain started.
But
just arrived we had to celebrate Harti's, DL6AUI's birthday with champagne and
rolls with hash and onions, as we did last year.
Well, that was exhausting!

Nevertheless we managed somehow the antenna setup of our 23cm mast and it
remained upright (not as last year) : a first small happy end. We've learned our
lesson! Meanwhile the rest of the team arrived from Greiz and we finished
preparations until 1200ut 2 hours left to contest start and right before the
rain started, not strong but constantly until darkness.
According
to our successful contact with DF0YY in May contest we decided to build up the
microwave tripods on the same small hill containing a water cistern which
guarantees a free takeoff from west over north to east. But is was cold and
windy outside!
47GHz was completely renewed by Roland, DK4RC, containing now a brand new DB6NT
amplifier and a mechanical waveguide switch. The output is estimated with about
50mW. It was quickly put on a separate tripod and we could hear the DB0FGB
beacon through the rainy clouds at first go! Not a matter of course regarding
the weather situation and the distance of >100km. That was promising!
On
Sunday morning the sky started to clear off and so our expectations began to
rise. Conditions on 23cm improved and we could log some I stations never worked
before. Even on 13cm we had our first I in the log. Time for new records now!
The temperature was quite low (about 4°C) and a strong wind was blowing from
north. Some contacts on 24GHz were made quickly and with strong signals. But we
failed with DF0YY even after some trials, we need a bit more of tropo
propagation to make it, obviously. No problems at all with DM7A and OK1AIY/p,
both 156km. As we asked Pavel for 47GHz he told us about very bad weather on his
side and so we decided to postpone the 47GHz trial.
Meanwhile,
some of our old fellows kept us busy on 24GHZ for a while and after that we had
some more time to optimize the feed on 47GHz. The DB0FGB beacon was always easy
to find even with a beam width of only +/-
1.5deg. Around
1000ut
we were ready again for the next try. A quick bearing check and QSY to
47088.200. There was a carrier strong and stable, was that OK1AIY/p ? One minute
later there was no doubt about it because it was his voice calling us loud and
clear. Not so easy to find a microphone and swith the right switches in that
confusion but we managed it somehow to answer him quickly after his call. I
think that Pavel was as surprised as we were concerning the quality of this QSO
over 156km! The signals were strong and stable with speaker copy all the time.
New CZ record was established and there is some more headroom left (look
also here for details!) . Shift expectations!

The rest of the contest was business as usual. No crashes no failures,
everything worked just fine. Here is a short overview :

So we experienced the second big
happy end and we were quite satisfied with the contest though our
competitors had some more QSO counts claimed. Lets see what the
results are worth for!
We hope to see you again soon in the
July contest !
