Contesting just for fun...

Here is the May - Contest report 2008 (by DB5SB and DL2ALF) :

As stated at the annual Dorsten Microwave Conference, we decided not to take part in the German Contest Trophy this year.

For the May contest, we decided to do some contesting on 23cm, 3cm (portable station) and 24GHz. As you know, after all those years of contesting, we can't really live without. So we packed our van as usual on Friday afternoon and started to our location at the Schneekopf at JO50JP on Saturday morning 8:00.

After unloading and installing the 23cm equipment we did some small tests and the equipment proved well. Due to the building of the 2nd tower, the north and east directions were nearly blocked out. As some of you might have noticed, we tried to compensate this fact on 3cm and 24GHz by changing the position of the tripod on Sunday. We finished setting up everything at 12:00 so we had 4 hours left until the contest starts. We used this time to relax a bit in the sun. Also time to remember the rest of the crew supporting DQ8N from their "Wetzstein" - QTH this contest.

At 16:00, the contest started. Thomas, DK5WN, decided to operate on 70cm with his own equipment and his own call sign. He sat up an improvisational "outdoor" station next to his car and made kind of good results.

Gerhard, DL2ASI, operated on 10GHz and 24GHz. And Frank, DL6ALF, and me, Sebastian, DB5SB operated mostly on 23cm. The contest itself was nice without any big surprises. Our equipment proved well as it had been for the last contests. The weather was very sunny but with a cold wind, especially on Sunday.

The disadvantage was that there was no rain scatter on 3cm and the condx weren't that good for microwave DX this time. With our grilled sausages and grilled steaks, it was a very nice, but small contest. I'm sorry for all the operators who asked for a QSO on 13/6/9cm, but we decided to do a small contest only. With 4 persons, setting up all those bands wouldn't be possible.

Thanks for all the QSO's on 23cm/3cm/1.2cm and hope to cuagn in June!
